Building Capacity – Building Character
Barli addresses the challenges confronted by socially and economically marginalized girls and women in Madhya Pradesh. The rural and tribal communities these young women come from are considered the most deprived in India. In this region, one person in eight is a girl or young woman age 10-24. They are the most vulnerable section of society and they face systematic disadvantages over a wide range of welfare indicators including health, education, nutrition, labor force participation and the burden of household tasks.
Because of deprivation and discriminatory cultural norms, many poor girls are forced to marry at very young ages and are very vulnerable to HIV, sexual violence, and physical exploitation. Lacking a full range of economic opportunities and devalued because of gender bias, many girls are seen as unworthy of investment or protection by their families.
Barli Development Institute for Rural Women started its first training in June 1985 with 19 women. Based in Indore, the Institute has completed 93 residential training sessions covering 16 life skill programs for more than 4,000 young women from 450 villages of Madhya Pradesh and other parts of India.
Barli's mission is “To initiate and build the process of sustainable development through empowerment of young rural and tribal women to become agents of social change. In this process Barli is focused on building their capacity with a wide range of skills and knowledge needed to improve the lives of their families, their communities and themselves.”
Barli Institute has received numerous awards. It was recognized by UNESCO as one of the top 100 education projects in developing countries, and was listed on the UN Environmental Programme's Global 500 Roll of Honor. The project has been funded by a European agency but this funding will end in a few months. Barli has reached out to Mona Foundation for help with general operating support so that they may continue assisting thousands of underserved rural women in one of the poorest provinces of India.
